The Legend of Spookily the Square Pumpkin is one of my favorite stories to use for Halloween. There is a book and app version! I have the app version. I really like it because it can be a bit more interactive for the kids since they can swipe the iPad to turn the page. It also has some little background noises that go with the story to help add some context and fun. My little ones think it is more like a movie when we use the AutoPlay mode.
The story is about a square pumpkin who was teased because he was different, but as most of these stories go, his difference is what saved the day! This year I decided to have a some fun with Spookley. After we read or listened to it we made our own Spookley! All you need are cheap paper plates, orange construction paper, scissors, a glue stick, and crayons.
Students cut the sides of the plate to make it square like Spookley. This is why I recommend the cheap paper plates, they are thinner and easier to cut. Then, they drew eyes and started to ripe pieces of construction paper and glue it to the plate. TA-DA! Instant Spookily!
I used this as a reinforcement for speech sounds, general reinforcement , describing: the wrote describing words about Spookley on the plate and put paper around it. There are so many ways you can use this activity!
Feel free to share your pictures if you use this activity. I would love to see them!
