It is really hard to find a nice, straight forward app to work on following directions. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of great following directions apps out there, but those can be a bit more advanced than what I need sometimes. When I initially work on following directions, I want to use something direct. Engaging, but not frilly. Following Directions by I Can Do Apps is a perfect combination.
It has 5 different levels with 10 directions in each. The app uses real pictures which I LOVE! They are clear and colorful. Just choose the level you want and tap START for that level. You can choose from a basic one step activity with “Touch the __” or more complex directions in “Before and After Statements”.
Students will choose from either a picture field of 2 or 3, depending on the task. You can read the direction to the student or tap the speaker button and it will read the direction for you. As students tap the pictures, they will either hear a ding and verbal praise, or a low tone to indicate the they did not complete the direction correctly. There is also a red or green outline that appears around the picture. Visual and auditory feedback, you gotta love it!
The app keeps track of how many questions the student answers correctly, which is helpful. You don’t need to enter in student information either, just tap START and you are good to go.
Overall
This is a great app for when you are introducing following directions/ before and after concepts and working with little ones. The real pictures are colorful and clear. The directions are straightforward. I like the progressive element with the tasks, going from one one step, to two step. I do wish there was a three step or two step with modifiers ( red, big, next to, etc ) option before the before and after, but that’s just me. It is great to have the option to target before and after though. Not many apps have that. This app is a steal for just $2.99! You can download it on iTunes.
