This year I have a lot of little students working on comprehension and WH-questions. I love using book companions with them, but some of them are a little to wiggly to sit for the story to be done, or even a few pages, before we get started. I needed something more interactive. So made an comprehension book to pair with one of my favorite fall/Halloween books, ‘The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything’.
This little book follows the sequence of the story to keep kids engaged. After each page or so, you can ask the student the WH-question and have them give you their answer. After they answer they can remove the question mark card to reveal a picture (with text) of the correct response.
I also found this helpful for targeting pronouns. After they answer I can ask follow up questions like “Who wasn’t afraid?” looking for or modeling the response using the correct pronoun. I love it when items can be flexible! I also made a make your own scarecrow mat. Students can build their own scarecrow in the same sequence as the items appeared in the book. Sing with me…”Do you wanna build a scarecrow!”
This comprehension book and build a scarecrow activity is available at me TpT store!
