🤔Are you writing the right goals for expressive language? Do you want your students to learn conjunctions and strengthen that oral to written expression connection?

We usually know what we want our students to be able to accomplish once we have determined the root of their deficit, but too often goals for the symptoms end up in the IEP😓⁣⁣

When it comes to expanding expressive language, write goals for the end results i.e. creating a compound sentence, understanding that you will be teaching the conjunctions as part of the process so that doesn’t really need to be it’s own goal. 💡⁣⁣

I give you sample goals and the data rubrics in the Compound Sentence Sidekick if you are worried about taking those steps with tracking in your sessions.⁣⁣

There’s nothing quite like a great gardening themed book to get ready for Spring.

I’m using them here to target basic concepts but since little trinkets can be so different, I.e. green dog, purple horse, sparkly egg, etc you can totally target:

I like using the 4x6 cards in the set if I’m pushing into a room. I can put them in a photo box with the mini object and TADA 🎉 portable concepts :)

Years ago I never gave the word ‘spectrum’ much thought. With Autism, I had assumed it was a mild, moderate, severe type of scale and that was that. 🤦🏼‍♀️⁣ ⁣

I didn’t know there was another way to think about it and that is what Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month is about. Autism Spectrum Disorder is not a linear diagnosis determined by where someone falls on a line. It is determined but the various strengths and weaknesses they exhibit. ⁣⁣

Think of it more like a color wheel. More saturated colors for strengths and lighter colors for areas of weakness. Autistic student may have skills in those vibrant areas, some in the middle, and some in the more muted areas.⁣ ⁣

I’ve had students who struggled to understand basic concepts but could repeat monologues from Aladdin with emotion and inflection that could rival some of Hollywood’s elite! Others who struggled with expressive language but knew just what to do to make you laugh and some who were bug experts and helped me figure out what ridiculous bug was covering my hydrangea...it was a leatherwing beetle BTW 😝⁣

They are not a puzzle to be solved. Each student is a mixture of abilities and their own amazing picture! 🎨⁣ ⁣
