I was so excited to start school this year just so I could decorate my speech room!  I had gotten Magical Social Skills from If I Only Had Super Powers  and loved the theme! I adored the Harry Potter series and thought it would be a fun theme to have in my room. The best was that I would be able to use the posters from the packet around my room and the activities from the packet would tie in as well.  So let’s take a look around shall we.

The door sign is made from an old metal sign I got at Hobby Lobby years ago.  I printed out the words and 9 3/4 circle from my printer on a red background then used some Modge Podge to adhere it.   The ‘Welcome to Speech’ sign is from my Magical Speech Room Theme packet.  I printed off a QR code with my contact info in it for parents to upload directly to their phones.

I decorated my desk with ‘SPEECH’ bunting ( also in my Magical Speech Room Theme packet ), a stuffed white owl that I got on Amazon, and this super cute ‘Keep Calm and Speech On’ picture I printed off from Crazy Speech World.  I had gotten the frame from Hobby Lobby last year on sale and it happened to work with beautifully.

You can see the posters from the Magical Social Skills packet above my white board. Just below those are some support pictures I made for my EET.  The black container on top of my wooden shelf is my ‘Question Cauldron’.  I used black spray paint, an empty Tide Pod container, and some gold sticky letters to make it. It is a magical version of a No Peeking Box. You will also see the milk crate I keep next to my table. I organize all the activities I am going to use for the day and put them in crate so I have them ready to go.   My basket of essentials has post-its, pens, tape, paper clips, etc., it helps me stay organized and keeps me from having to leave the table to get things. The chair is an old project I had done that I found in, you guessed it, my basement. My kids have been going CRAZY about sitting in it.

I found the Sorting Hat on Amazon for super cheap and thought it would be a fun decor item for my room, but now wearing it has turned into a prize option for my kids.  I had the owl Scentsy warmer already and it just fit my theme to well not to use it.  It has actually proved to be quite helpful for my kids who need to work on advocating and requesting.  Some of my kids love the smell and request to have it turned on, others are not so fond of it and will ask to have it turned off.  You can also see my Common Core Cans.

Finally my reinforcement system. I made a large board game that fits one of the bulletin boards in my room. Students each select a game piece ( located in the bag next to the blue chair ) and write their name on it. I have started using small labels to write their names on and then place the label on the game piece. We tried dry erase markers last year but those just kept smudging.  After our speech session is complete and they have followed my speech room expectations ( which are on the back of my door ) they may roll a die and move around the game board. If they land on a PRIZE square they get to choose a ticket from my prize bin. The ticket is scanned ( they have QR codes on them ) and it reveals their prize. So far it has been working well.  I also have my iPad Pledge ( free at my TpT store ) hanging up as a nice reminder for my students.

I would love to see what your rooms look like. Feel free to comment and post pictures 🙂

    1. Hi Arielle,
If you click the highlighted ‘ my behavior management/reinforcement system ‘ it will take you to the post that talks about how it works. So far it is working well. The kids are excited to find out what their prize is and love using the Scan app on the iPad.

  1. Hi Maureen,

I wanted to follow up asking how you set up a QR code for your kiddos to use for reinforcers prizes? Our district just received a technology upgrade this past Spring, so I wanted to try to incorporate as much technology as I can for this coming school year.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Stephanie,
I responded to you on your other comment but wanted to make sure that I got you on this one too 🙂 I used the site goqr.me to create the codes. I hope that helps 🙂

      1. Thanks Maureen! Things have been crazy so i don’t remember where I commented on the other page :-/. Was there more than what you provided here?

  2. Hi Maureen,

I was wondering where you found or how you created the mini witches/wizards and their broomsticks? I am going with a Harry Potter theme for my room this year and love these little guys. Thanks!
