I really enjoy using QR codes in speech. They are something different for the kids and bring in that bit of technology that will keep them engaged. When I was at the grocery store the other day I noticed those funny looking little boxes EVERYWHERE! They were on crackers, milk, soda, even my shampoo. So after I put my frozen goods away I got right to creating this new activity. Introducing…Shopping for QR Codes!
This activity uses a grocery store theme to address attributes and a little bit of categorizing via an included worksheet.
Students each get a LISTO board, there are 5 included with the activity. The LISTO board will also act as their grocery list for the worksheet.
LISTO is played just like BINGO. Students select a card (there are 24 ) and read the clues. After they have made a guess about what the mystery item could be, they may check it using a QR Code app. I use Scan for iPhone/iPad, but there are others. After the mystery item is revealed they may cover the matching item on their LISTO board. The first student to get 5 across, up and down, diagonal, really whatever type of pattern you want, wins!
After your game is finished you can used the included worksheet to have students sort some of the items from their grocery list items aka LISTO board into the given categories.
Also included in this activity is a note for parents and an activity that can be play at the grocery store to encourage carryover of the skill. Included is a partially filled in LISTO board. Parents are encouraged to add items from their own grocery list into the blank spaces of the board. As students find the items on the list they state attributes them and cross them off the list.

I love using QR codes! It is something that the kids don’t do in other classes so it keeps them interested and engaged in the activity.

I love using QR codes because the students stay more interested in the activity, it makes the task unpredictable and the seem to work harder. I created a synonym, antonym, definition activity using QR codes.
I like using QR codes because they are unique for kids to use. The students love using my iPad to scan the codes. It’s fun and incorporates technology!

The response time is pretty fast, about a second or two is all it takes.

I’ve never used QR codes before but after reading this post and looking at some other things on TpT I would love to start! I think it will really engage the kids in the lesson and learning the material presented. Thanks for always making such useful materials!
