A long time ago, I was a Girl Scout. I loved it! The camping, the crafts, the cookies! I still love all of those thing, but I think my love of the cookies has grown the most. Well, as a I grew, I became a camp counselor for the Girl Scout day camp I had gone to for years. One of the many duties I had was to tell and teach my campers songs and folk tales. This was one I had heard and told years ago and had forgotten about it until recently.
It was one of my favorites! So I decided to turn it into a little book for you and make some fun activities to go with it. The Apple Star is about an apple tree who wants to have a star from the sky. One day a fairy comes and tells the tree that if its good, it will get a star of its own. After a long time, the fairy returns and the tree ( who has been very good ) asks when it will get its star. The fairy tells the tree that it has had many stars the entire time. There are special, secret stars in the apples it has worked so hard to grow. The message is that we may already have the things we wish for, all we need to do is look inside ourselves to find them.

A craft and ideas, and more! I know some of you may be thinking that apples are strictly a fall thing, but I think they are a year round item! You can get apples all year long at the grocery which means you can get apples to accompany the story at any time and kids will the apples at the store ( if they go with their parents ) and be reminded ( hopefully ) of the wonderful story of The Apple Star.

So glad to hear that you were a Girl Scout! I was, too, but not for a long time as a kid (my mom was not into the whole volunteer thing). As an adult, I was a Leader for my daughter’s troop from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I also worked a local Day Camp for a week each summer for 15 years (even after my daughter graduated from high school because one of my best friends was in charge of it)! Girl Scouts is a great organization for girls and gives them a lot of leadership opportunities.
